Hello Traveler! This is Elsie, your host of Tunes from the Tavern, the fantasy/ bardcore show here on WMWC.
This week we are starting St. Patrick’s Day celebrations early (even though it’s never too early to start St. Patrick’s Day celebrations) with some “Celtic Notes”, a term taken from the classic CDs that highlighted Irish music.
First up is everyone’s Favorite, Celtic Woman. Debuting in 2005, Celtic Woman is a “fresh fusion of traditional Irish music and contemporary songcraft celebrates Ireland’s history while reflecting the vibrant spirit of modern Ireland”. This group consists of four Irish women who have changed multiple times in the past 20 years, backed by an Irish ensemble and dancers at their performances. For a little taste, here’s,
- Sky and the Dawn and the Sun
- Ballroom of Romance
Up next is a song with a story. Wyndreth Berginsdottir, a member of the Society for Creative Anacronism, the SCA, wrote her song “Savage Daughter” in 1990. This song takes inspiration from viking age culture and oral traditions. She created it as an “anthem of empowerment” and since it’s recording in 2009, it has become an anthem for many women in many different cultures. Up next I will be playing a cover of this song by Sarah Hester Ross, followed By Rose
Betts’ “Irish Eyes”.
- Savage Daughter
- Irish Eyes
Up next are three songs sung in Irish. Here’s,
- (Irish) Tír na nÓg : Celtic Woman
- (Irish) Ni Na La : Órla Fallon
- Gaol Ise Gaol I (She’s my Love) : Kathleen Maclnnes
Up next we have some Irish folk, and folk-inspired songs,
- The Lily of the West – The Chieftans, Mark Knopler
- Round and Round – Erutan
- The Maid that sold her barley – Deanta
For our Second-to-last section, a few more Gaelic and Gallic songs. One day, I hope to learn this beautiful language. Heres,
- (irish) Ce a chuirfdh tu Liom – Arcanadh {kay a hurry to loam]
- (Scottish Gaelic) A Phiuthrag’s a Phinuthar – Julie Fowlis [a furag’s a furer]
- (Irish) Tha Mo Ghaol Air Àird a’ Chuain – Julie Fowlis
To finish out, Here’s
- Follow Me – Celtic Woman
- This Endris Night
- Skye Boat Song
- Dúlaman
Well traveler, it’s time to go on your way. Thank you for joining me at WMWC and I’ll see you next week on St. Patrick’s Day for some Irish Drinking Songs
